Will Cavendish

Biography

Will Cavendish was appointed Director General of Innovation, Growth and Technology in June 2014.

He is responsible for promoting innovation and technology to bring about a major transformation in health outcomes and in health and care delivery; and supporting innovative and globally competitive health and care sectors, boosting UK jobs and growth.

Before joining the department, he was Executive Director of the Implementation Group for the Cabinet Office, which was responsible for:

  • implementing the PM and DPM’s top policy priorities
  • monitoring and improving policy implementation across the whole of government
  • the Open Public Service programme, responsible for the government’s parliament-long programme of public service reform
  • the Red Tape Challenge, a pan-Whitehall programme to reduce and improve the stock of regulation on the statute book, thereby meeting the PM’s commitment to leave office having reduced the overall burden of regulation

Will has a PhD in Economics. He has worked for the World Bank and held a number of non-executive positions with organisations such as the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and the Coram Children’s Charity.

Director General of Innovation, Growth and Technology

Part of the Department of Health senior team and an executive member of its board, the Director General of Innovation, Growth and Technology is responsible for:

  • strengthening the leadership and capacity in the areas of innovation
  • growth and the use of technology including digital across the health and care system
